Dear Mr. Burney:

I am writing to thank you for your recent decision to maintain your strong policy of nonencirclement of dolphins for your "dolphin safe" tuna products (Letter from U.S. Tuna Foundation to Secretary William Daley, February 18, 1999).

On Earth Day 1990, your company and the other U.S. tuna processors, joining with environmental, animal welfare and consumer organizations, announced that you would no longer buy or sell tuna caught by methods known to harm thousands of dolphins. I joined millions of consumers around the world in cheering this heartening example of corporate responsibility and sensitivity to a difficult environmental problem. Your company and your colleagues took a bold step, embracing the protection of these marine mammals as a part of your corporate responsibility.

I was proud to work with your company on the subsequent federal legislation that became the Dolphin Protection Consumer Information Act, establishing our strong "dolphin safe" nonencirclement policy in federal law.

Over the past three years, Congress has continued the debate over tuna fishing practices. Your letter to Secretary Daley shows your company's commitment to the American consumers and our environment.

Thank you for your courage and vision.

Sincerely,

Barbara Boxer
United States Senator
